Custodial history
Accessions 80-042 and 198012-017 were forwarded from Douglas College, New Westminster by D.R. Williams, Director of Libraries, in 1980.
Accession 2012.155 was found by Lorne Hammond, curator of History, in his office when he started at RBCM in 1997. The material was transferred to the Archives in 2012.
Scope and content
The series consists of historical research notes, drafts and transcripts of articles and speeches, scrapbooks on aspects of British Columbia history (including one on Duff Pattullo, his political adversary), brief biographical notes on George H. Southwell, and correspondence. The correspondence is predominantly from the 1930’s and 1940’s, when McKelvie was at his most active in politics and when he was most productive as a writer. Included in the correspondence are approximately 50 letters from Sydney Seymour Saunders which detail his memories of First Nations people on Vancouver Island, and their customs and legends. There are also copies of letters and documents regarding the visit of Pedro de Alberni to Nootka. Also included in this series are two full transcripts of unpublished books by McKelvie: “Sealers and Sourdoughs” and “Resurrections Inc.: A Satire on Some Modern Methods.”
