CALL NUMBER: T1169:0002a RECORDED: Tasu (B.C.), [196-?] SUMMARY: The first of six tapes recorded on-site at the open-pit iron and copper mine at Tasu on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Imbert Orchard describes and discusses the mine operation with an unidentified guide as he tours the site. This first tape introduces the mine operation, and describes the facilities and machinery, and the geology of the area.

CALL NUMBER: T1169:0002b RECORDED: Tasu (B.C.), [196-?] SUMMARY: The second tape in this series details the explosive methods used in the mining operation, and the transportation of the rock from the pit into the primary crushing station.

CALL NUMBER: T1169:0002c RECORDED: Tasu (B.C.), [196-?] SUMMARY: The third tape in this series. Operations of the primary crusher station are described, including the coarse ore stockpiles. The secondary crusher operation is also discussed.

CALL NUMBER: T1169:0003a RECORDED: Tasu (B.C.), [196-?] SUMMARY: The fourth tape in this series. Operations covered include the journey of the material from the primary crusher to the primary screen. The material is then sorted and separated magnetically into different sized chunks of ore. Ken Ackles, mill foreman, has been the speaker. Machinery operations are described.

The concentrator building is described, including the grinding operations, rod mills, launderers, pump boxes, cyclones, magnetic finishes, and the copper settling pond, all of which are involved in the process of producing iron and copper concentrates.

Operations of the concentrating plant are discussed, including emergency procedures. Three types of concentrates are produced: copper concentrate, pellet iron concentrate and iron cinder (?) concentrate. Methods of storage, and the shipping procedures for ore concentrating vessels, are described.
