A very gentle man: the Reverend George William Taylor, M.A., F.R.S.C., F.Z.S. 1854-1912 / Edward Drummond Taylor

The item is a transcript copy of a biography by Edward Drummond Taylor titled "A very gentle man: the Reverend George William Taylor, M.A., F.R.S.C., F.Z.S. 1854-1912". The Reverend G.W. Taylor was an Anglican clergyman in Victoria and in the Nanaimo area (Gabriola Island, Cedar, and Wellington). He was very interested in natural history, campaigned for the establishment of a Pacific marine biological station at Nanaimo and was its first curator. E.D. Taylor was his grandson.

The series consists of a bound volume containing 93 hand drawn plans created or acquired by the Taxation Branch and its predecessor, the Surveyor of Taxes. The plans were used in the Provincial Assessment district of Nanaimo between 1928 and 1938, with the occasional plan inserted later.

The volume contains plans of Gabriola Island, Mudge Island, Texada Island, Oyster district, Bright district, Cedar district, Cranberry district, Nanaimo district, Mountain district, Wellington district, Newcastle district and Nanoose district. Most of the plans are on paper backed by linen although some of them are tracing paper. The plans are drawn in ink or pencil and show lots, roads, highways, railways and other features, many marked in coloured pencil.

Departure Bay

Item consists of a mount of two waterfront photographs adhered to card to create a panoramic view of Departure Bay, Nanaimo. Adhesive is unknown. The image includes a dock, buildings, and a small number of boats and ships. "Departure Bay" is written on the verso in pencil.
The sternwheeler on the left may be the S.S. Dakota. The ship on the right is the S.S. Abyssinia.

Series consists of one record book created by the Nanaimo Provincial Police Court between 28 July 1948 and 30 Dec 1950. Records relate to a variety of Nanaimo district matters including: motor vehicle driving and license offences, liquor offenses, etc. Entries can include details such as: date, name of prosecutor, name of defendant, nature of the charge(s), costs, arresting officer, order or conviction fine amount, date fine paid, receipt number, signature of magistrate, and additional remarks such as plea.

Nanaimo mine photographs

The series consists of 17 b&w photographs taken in November 1953 by the Photographic Branch of the Government Travel Bureau. The photographs depict the above ground workings of various defunct mines near Nanaimo BC and include shots of equipment and buildings, the original Wellington Collieries railway and the last coal brought up from Bright Mine in 1953.

Oaths of allegiance, correspondence and reports

The series consists of various records created by the Provincial Police Force between 1906 and 1914. Box 1 contains a list of special constables sent to the Nanaimo strike in 1913, and oaths of allegiance. Box 2 contains correspondence and reports from December 1913 to January 1914 regarding the Nanaimo strike and reports of operatives in Revelstoke dated May and June 1911. Box 3 contains correspondence and operatives' reports from 1906 regarding the Fernie strike.

This series consists of land registers for various areas on Vancouver Island and some Gulf Islands. Records cover the following Land Districts: Bright, Cedar, Cranberry, Mountain, Nanoose, Nanaimo, Wellington, Comox, Douglas, Clayoquat, Nootka, Oyster and Chemainus. Records cover the following Islands: Valdes Island, Thetis Island, Kuper [Penelakut] Island, Mayne Island, Prevost Island and Gabriola Island. Earliest entries began in 1855 and all volumes were superseded by 1942 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1942).

The registers list the land in numerical order, usually by Range and Section, but occasionally by lot. There can be up to three methods of land description within one Land District. Information may include the name of purchaser, dates and number of certificate issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. The volume contains an index to districts by page number, and an alphabetical index to grantees.
