Administrative history

The North Gabriola School District was established in 1883 as a common school district to provide schooling for the children on the north end of Gabriola Island. Prior to that, Gabriola School District was established in 1872 for all the children on the island. In 1906, the two Gabriola schools were each classified as a rural school district. Another school was opened on the island in 1919 forming the East Gabriola School District. In 1936, the East Gabriola School was closed and the South and North Gabriola School Districts were amalgamated to form the Gabriola United School District.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of records kept by the trustees of North Gabriola School District as required by the Public Schools Act. Records include a school trustee's letterbook (1883-1895) and minute and account books (1884-1932). The fonds also includes records created in Gabriola School District prior to 1883. The records are individual records of students attending Gabriola School (1877-1878), the only school on the island from 1872 to 1883.

General note

School districts were first created in British Columbia under the Common Schools Ordinance, 1869, as the basic administrative units of the public school system. Prior to that, school districts were established in the Colony of Vancouver Island under the Common Schools Act, 1865. School district status was available under the ordinance, at the request two-thirds of the resident householders, if there were at least 12 children between the ages of 5 and 18. Some funding was provided to cover teachers' salaries until 1872 when the Public Schools Act (SBC 1872, c. 16) was revised to provide full subsidization to authorized school districts. Amendments related to school districts were made to the act over the years. In 1906, an amendment to the Public Schools Act (SBC 1906, c. 39) provided for two types of school districts: municipal school districts (including rural municipality school districts) and rural school districts. Larger, regionally defined school districts were established in 1946 in response to the Cameron Report (Public Schools Act (SBC 1946, c. 64).
