Canadian hydrographic charts

The series consists of published charts produced by the Canadian Hydrographic Service between 1909 and 1990.
The charts are listed according to chart number. Multiple editions of a chart are listed chronologically according to date of edition or latest correction.
Researchers are directed first to identify the chart numbers of the desired charts using one of the Index sheets described at the beginning of the chart list, and then to use the list to identify the call numbers for the desired charts. The charts have been copied onto 105mm negatives, which are arranged in call number order in the Archives Reference Room.

Researchers seeking information on the Canadian Hydrographic Service are advised to consult: Stanley Fillmore and R.W. Sandilands. The Chartmakers: A History of Nautical Surveying in Canada (Maps NW 526.99 F487).

Halibut being lifted out onto the wharf. Men in hold loading halibut into net. In more southerly waters, a small halibut boat at sea and description of how to catch the fish. Fisherman chucks a barrel-buoy overboard, followed by a coil of line, and he makes ready to feed out the long-line. The long-line is paid out slowly, with bundles of hooks, or 'skates' being baited before they slip under the sea. [Long shot] and [close-up] of halibut being pulled in over the side. Halibut in the hold. In northern waters, small boats are taken to the fishing ground by larger boats on their decks, then lowered into the sea where they hoist sail and row to their area. A Large boat from Seattle arrives, lowers its boats onto the ocean, and they row away with two men in each. The Line is let out by hand over the stern, then hauled in by hand. The mother ship picks up the small boats, their crews and their catch, and sails away. [Long shot of] Prince Rupert from the sea. Crowded wharfside scene with many fishboats. [Vancouver Island and Mainland] : [footage]

Footage. This lengthy compilation comprises the earliest Booth films (mostly unedited 100-foot reels), placed in chronological order. They focus on travel and recreation in two major areas: Vancouver Island and the lower Fraser Canyon. The first reel (1931) shows an auto court and various scenes around the Fraser Canyon, including native Indians drying fish. This is followed by a series of reels (all from 1932) showing tourist spots and recreation on Vancouver Island, including Butchart Gardens, Goldstream Park, Saanich Inlet, a lake (possibly Shawnigan Lake), skating (at Lost Lagoon, Vancouver), fishing and water sports at Vancouver Island spots, the Chemainus River, Nanaimo, the CPR ferry "Princess Elaine", a pan of Comox Valley, many coastal features, and a sequence on hikers in high mountain terrain. Another reel shows details of native fishing in the Fraser Canyon. A brief sequence (ca. 1933), shows a car on a snowy road being towed by two horses. The last reel (1934) shows fishing at Campbell River.

[Vancouver Island picnic & Columbia Coast mission boat dedication]

Amateur film. "This reel was likely photographed by a crewman of the "Columbia", the flagship of the Columbia Coast Mission boats. . . . No location is known for either the picnic or for what looks to be a dedication, but both events likely occurred on Vancouver Island. Pan across what is probably a church picnic outside a hall -- cooking pits, people eating and talking, etc. -- ends on [close-up] of a car with a 1935 licence plate with men gathered about talking. Meat roasting on fire. Pan across smoking cooking pit. Pan across picnickers. Men tossing horseshoes. Mother with baby, other picnickers. Group shot on what is probably the Columbia Coast Mission boat "Columbia". Two women, two men and a boy. Wharf in [background] with car. [Close-ups] of each of the women laughing into the camera. Three Anglican ministers on the stern of what is probably a Columbia Coast Mission boat, performing what appears to be a dedication service. Windy. A small crowd listens as the boat rocks in the sea. Boat appears to be tied up alongside another, from which vantage point this film is being shot. [medium shot, long shot, then close-up] of the three ministers performing ceremony. Various other shots of service." (Colin Browne)
