The Princess

Documentary. This film depicts a trip from Seattle to Victoria on the S.S. Princess Marguerite, and profiles the history of the ship -- and of her namesake, an earlier B.C. coastal steamship that was sunk during World War II while serving as a troop transport.

Long road to travel

The item is a reel of industrial film showing the transportation of logs from the forest to the mill. The main part of the film follows a load of logs down the coast from Masset Inlet on Haida Gwaii aboard the self-dumping log barge "Haida Carrier", towed by the tug "Haida Chieftain". Also includes footage of logging trucks and the manufacture and shipping of forest products.

Klahanie : The Stranny : [fragment]

Item consists of a documentary showing outdoor gathering of five men listening to Hugh Mann and Stu Phillips talk about their experiences flying the Supermarine Stranraer flying boat on the west coast. The flying boat is anchored near shore in the background and later seen in flight. The film is an excerpt from an episode of the weekly television show.

Land of the totem pole : sound track

The item is a documentary narration track. Ecologist and nature photographer Bristol Foster, Ph.D., introduces the coastal area of British Columbia, including the Queen Charlotte Islands, where we see eagles, sea lions and a Peale's falcon, as well as evidence of the ancient culture of the Haida. The Kwakiutl raise a new totem pole for the first time in 30 years, a sign that the ancient skills have not been lost.

D.W. Hodgson interview

He describes how he came to BC in 1904 and offers his impressions of Vancouver and Victoria at that time; various early jobs; encounters with Indians; automobiles in the Cariboo in 1910; looking for a railway pass in the Chilco area; impressions of Lillooet; stories abo;ut working with a survey crew for the BC Electric Railway; a discussion of early railway surveying; stories about survey crews; a discussion of work on the BC coast; examining inlets for hydro electric power possibilities in the early 1920s. Archaeology projects in British Columbia, 1972 : Simon Fraser University field school footage

The series consists of 9 reels of unedited footage shot by filmmakers working under an Opportunities For Youth (OFY) grant to document archaeological projects all over British Columbia. These 9 reels record the activities of Simon Fraser University archaeology field schools in the summer of 1972. Footage shows students travelling up the coast by boat (F1992:07/001); excavations, etc., at Kwatna (F1992:07/002-005) and Kimsquit (F1992:07/007-009); work in the SFU archaeology lab; and displays at the SFU Museum of Archaeology (F1992:07/006).

Television commercials. A representative collection of MacMillan Bloedel television commercials highlighting various aspects of the company's operations and corporate citizenship. Includes spots focusing on the company's activities in world trade markets; methods of transporting logs and products; the self-dumping log barge; log sorting with dozer boats; new methods of planting and reforestation; forest fire protection; pollution control; the Ash River Valley reforestation project, begun in 1942; the educational activities of wildlife filmmaker Tommy Tompkins, sponsored by MacMillan Bloedel; and a bird sanctuary near Port Alberni supported by the company. Each spots is 1-2 minutes long.

[Vancouver Island and Mainland] : [footage]

Footage. This lengthy compilation comprises the earliest Booth films (mostly unedited 100-foot reels), placed in chronological order. They focus on travel and recreation in two major areas: Vancouver Island and the lower Fraser Canyon. The first reel (1931) shows an auto court and various scenes around the Fraser Canyon, including native Indians drying fish. This is followed by a series of reels (all from 1932) showing tourist spots and recreation on Vancouver Island, including Butchart Gardens, Goldstream Park, Saanich Inlet, a lake (possibly Shawnigan Lake), skating (at Lost Lagoon, Vancouver), fishing and water sports at Vancouver Island spots, the Chemainus River, Nanaimo, the CPR ferry "Princess Elaine", a pan of Comox Valley, many coastal features, and a sequence on hikers in high mountain terrain. Another reel shows details of native fishing in the Fraser Canyon. A brief sequence (ca. 1933), shows a car on a snowy road being towed by two horses. The last reel (1934) shows fishing at Campbell River.

Cannery operations before 1908, including the "Iron Chink" salmon butchering machine. Story of a close call at sea in the Aleutians. Halibut fishing. Went to Bering Strait before 1908. First fishing boat. Ranching in Alberta after WWI; hard hit by the Depression. His grandfather settled on Orcas Island and grew hay. [Mr. Still grew up on Orcas.] TRACK 2: Probably made trip to the Bering Sea in 1903 or later. Rowboat fishing. Fish abundant. Story of man abandoned by dog team. Eskimos at cannery. Toketie makes another cruise summer 1940

Amateur film. Coastal people, places and scenery between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Includes footage of Indian villages, pictographs, birds and wildlife, logging operations, other vessels, etc. One sequence shows a Kelly raft of aviation spruce being broken up; another shows logs being unloaded from the log barge "Monongahela" (formerly the ship "Balasore", whose figurehead is shown sitting on shore). The B.C. Packers cannery at Quathiaski Cove is shown. Troops arrive at Nanaimo from Vancouver on the "Princess Victoria" and parade through the streets.

Leander Carlson interview

CALL NUMBER: T0020:0001 SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Leander Carlson RECORDED: Burnaby (B.C.), 1972-03-29 SUMMARY: Leander Carlson came to Canada in 1905. He held various labouring jobs including construction on the prairies, rail road construction, logging etc. Became unemployed in 1914 and enlisted in the army. He "fought in every major battle the Canadian's were in". Came back to Saskatchewan and got a homestead which he left to become a prefect on an Indian reservation. He remained there for some years before finally leaving in order to be near a school his children could go to.
