Biographical history

Joseph Despard Pemberton (1821-1893) was born in Dublin, Ireland. He came to B.C. in 1851 to serve as a surveyor with the Hudson's Bay Company. J.D. Pemberton served as Colonial Surveyor and was a politician in the colonial era. He married Theresa Jane Despard Grautoff in 1864. Their six children were: Frederick Bernard Pemberton, Ada Georgina Pemberton, Sophia Theresa (Sophie) Pemberton, Harriet Susan Pemberton, Joseph Despard Pemberton, and William Parnell Despard Pemberton. The children married into prominent Victoria families and were involved in many community organizations. With his son, Frederick, J.D. Pemberton founded the company Pemberton & Son, succeeded by Pemberton Holmes Ltd. J.D. Pemberton's uncle, Augustus Frederick Pemberton, and his sister, Mary, also came to British Columbia.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a book of daily scripture readings with annotations by Sophie Pemberton, a diary and a register of conveyances both belonging to Joseph D. Pemberton and the photographs of Mab Pemberton and the Pemberton family.
