Biographical history

Joseph Despard Pemberton was born in Dublin, Ireland, and came to B.C. in 1851 to serve as a surveyor with the Hudson's Bay Company. He was Surveyor General for the Colony of Vancouver Island, a politician, and landowner in the area that would become Oak Bay. He married Theresa Jane Despard Grautoff in 1864. Their six children were: Frederick Bernard Pemberton, Ada Georgina Pemberton, Sophia Theresa (Sophie) Pemberton, Harriet Susan Pemberton, Joseph Despard Pemberton, and William Parnell Despard Pemberton. In 1887, with his son, Frederick, J.D. Pemberton founded the partnership Pemberton & Son, succeeded by Pemberton Holmes Ltd. J.D. Pemberton died in Victoria in 1893.

The series consists of a surveying notebook (cover labelled "Trigonometl. Memda."). It contains 51 pages of sketches, instructions, notes, drafts of letters, etc. covering Victoria, Esquimalt, Nanaimo and Metchosin districts.
