Biographical history

In 1922, approved and ordered by Order-in-Council 0421-1922 (April 12, 1922), Penticton was “fixed as a place for the holding of the County Court of Yale,” effective May 1, 1922.

By the same Order-in-Council, the British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Penticton, effective the same date. The OIC refers to “a registry” for the Supreme Court, but does not refer to a registry for the County Court.

All County Courts were merged into the Supreme Court on July 1, 1990.

Custodial history

Volumes of County and Family court indexes appear to have been in the custody of the Supreme Court registry prior to their transfer to the BC Archives.

Scope and content

Series consists of alphabetical indexes for Penticton Supreme, County, and Family Court civil cause books and case record cards between 1958 and 1990. The location of the cause books and case record cards to which they refer is unknown. Indexes provide only a case file number. They do not provide volume and folio numbers necessary to locate civil orders and judgements.
