Custodial history

Dubs of audio tapes held by Peter A. Knox, Fort Rupert, B.C. Knox's collection was dubbed by Phil Thomas at the James Knox residence in Fort Rupert in August, 1967. Thomas's tapes were copied by the BC Archives and returned to Thomas in June 1976. (Retroactive receipt date: 1983-02-08.)

Scope and content

The collection comprises sound recordings of Kwakiutl songs and ceremonies, 1959-1967. These tapes are copies of recordings accumulated by Peter A. Knox of Fort Rupert, from a variety of sources (including Mungo Martin and the CBC). The material includes recordings of Mungo Martin, Emma Hunt, Helen Hunt and Frank Savey; a potlatch for Peter Hunt; a funeral ceremony for David Martin (d. 1959); and a potlatch for David Martin.

Location of originals

In 1967, the originals were held by the Know family of Fort Rupert. According to Gloria Webster of the Alert Bay Museum (ca. 1983), the originals may have been lost.
