Scope and content

The series consists of a photograph album, possibly created by either photographer Edward Dossetter or Dr. I.W. Powell (Superintendent of Indian Affairs for British Columbia) in 1881-1882. The album contains 52 photographs, six illustrations apparently cut from a magazine or book and one postcard of an engraving.

The first 35 photographs were taken by Dossetter during the inspection of coastal Indian Reserves by Powell, on their 1881 trip on the HMS Rocket. The photographs are of First Nations people and villages. The album also contains a photograph of the Gorge in Victoria, seven photographs of celebration arches, four photographs of Esquimalt Harbour and two of Lytton, taken in 1882. These photographs may have been taken by Richard Maynard.

In addition there are six illustrations, mostly religious artworks, three photographs of Cornwall, England and a postcard engraving of a cannery.

Notes area

Physical condition

Album is in poor shape. The spine has broken and the back cover is missing. The pages are acidic board or card and the photographs have been glued in. The pages have buckled, possibly from moisture and many of the prints have been poorly processed. Archives staff have stamped the pages next to the photographs with a Provincial Archives of British Columbia stamp and have written photograph numbers (HP numbers) in pen.

Immediate source of acquisition

Arrangement

The pages in the album are numbered and there are captions written in below the photographs. When there is no title actually on the photograph, the captions have been transcribed for the item level description titles. The dates and other information have been taken from I.W. Powell's report to the Dept. of Indian Affairs, 1881.

There are copies of some of the photographs, including some glass negatives, catalogued under the same HP numbers in the Archives general file. In some, the captions and statement of responsibility can be seen on the loose photograph but have been cropped from the version in the album. The scanned copies may have been taken from the loose copies in those cases.
