Custodial history

Scope and content

Series consists of colour and black and white photographs, including prints, contact sheets, negatives and transparencies taken by Jim Ryan between ca. 1945 and 1992.

The photographs are arranged alphabetically in subject categories although many of the subjects overlap and copies of the same photograph can appear in various subject files. Occasionally the photographs in the envelope do not match the subject heading. The negatives and transparencies are filed separately from the prints and although most of their subject headings coincide with the print files, some have different titles.

Very few photographs are identified beyond a general subject heading and almost none of them are dated. Most of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area to illustrate local news stories written for various papers including the Victoria Daily Colonist and the Vancouver Sun. Some of the subject files have copies of the news stories or the newspaper articles included. Unidentified photographs are filed at the end.
