Scope and content

Studio portrait taken at a photographic studio attributed to Mrs. R. Maynards Photographic Gallery, part of a number of portraits taken of Indigenous sitters in the 1860s and 1870s. The portrait (full-length) consists of an unidentified Indigenous individual standing with cloth bags at their feet. It is a collodion glass plate negative (3.25 x 4.25 inches). The studio flooring (geometric pattern tiling - x pattern) and a partial view of the scenic studio backdrop (window and balcony scene) are visible. The sitter wears a labret in their nose, hair wrapped in a scarf, has a blanket wrapped around their shoulders and appears to wear American/European clothes underneath. The sitter's gaze is looking forward. This negative has not been manipulated.
