Scope and content

Studio portrait taken at a photographic studio attributed to Mrs. R. Maynards Photographic Gallery, part of a number of portraits taken of Indigenous sitters in the 1860s and 1870s. The portrait (full-length) consists of two unidentified Indigenous individuals (one young adult, one older individual) seated and standing. It is a collodion glass plate negative (3.25 x 4.25 inches). The studio flooring (geometric pattern tiling - x pattern), furniture (chair) and a view of the scenic studio backdrop (window and balcony scene) is visible. The sitters wear their hair long. Both individuals have blankets wrapped around their shoulders and appear to wear American/European clothes underneath. Both sitters have one hand visible, have bare feet and are both looking forward. One sitter has their arm placed on the arm of the other individual. The bracelets on the one of the sitter's arms does not appear to show any engraved designs. This image depicts a wider view of the portrait studio, revealing an alternative flooring underneath the first (wood flooring). This negative has not been manipulated.
