Item consists of a portrait photograph of Mary, a Haida woman. She was employed as a washerwoman by Hannah Maynard from 1867-1869. The negative has not been manipulated.

The catalog entry for this portrait is number “x74” in the Newcombe Register (register 1, entry 74, X Lantern slides section) states the following: "Haida woman in H.B. blanket - small labret. Maynard." Another catalog entry for this portrait is under number “M155” in the Newcombe Register (register 2, entry 155, M-E Maynard Ethnology Negatives section, page 45) which states the following: "Haida woman with "button" labret + H.B. blanket (Vic). Maynard." See also PN5311-A for a print with a Maynard stamp on the verso or a modern black and white print of a composite image (composed of the studio portrait PN05311-B and field photograph PN05697).
