Scope and content

Studio portrait taken at a photographic studio attributed to Mrs. R. Maynards Photographic Gallery, part of a number of portraits taken of Indigenous sitters in the 1860s and 1870s. The portrait (front profile, mid-length) consists of an unidentified Indigenous individual seated and holding a container of berries. It is a collodion glass plate negative (3.25 x 4 inches). The studio flooring (geometric pattern tiling - square and diamond pattern) and plain studio backdrop are visible. The sitter wears their hair in braids and has a blanket wrapped around their shoulders. A woven basket is also wrapped around their shoulders and visible behind the sitter. The sitter's gaze is looking directly into the camera. This negative does not appear to have been manipulated.

Notes area

Physical condition

The negative is missing emulsion near the top and bottom edges, as well as one side edge of the portrait. There are also cracks in the emulsion over the entire plate. These conditions result in some loss of the visual information in those areas.
