Scope and content

Studio portrait taken at a photographic studio attributed to Mrs. R. Maynards Photographic Gallery, part of a number of portraits taken of Indigenous sitters in the 1860s and 1870s. The portrait (front profile, mid-length) consists of an unidentified Indigenous individual seated. It is a collodion glass plate negative (3.25 x 4.25 inches). The plain studio backdrop is not visible. The sitter wears their hair tied back, has a shawl wrapped around their shoulders. The sitter's gaze is looking forward. Their hands are not visible. This negative has been manipulated (e.g. the backdrop has been removed/scratched out).

Notes area

Physical condition

The negative is missing emulsion near the top and bottom sections of the portrait. There is also red [paint] on the surface of the negative, in parts of the plate where the emulsion remains. In addition, a black medium is located on the majority of surface of the negative, except around the image of the sitter. These conditions result in some loss of the visual information in those areas.
