Biographical history
The Hospital Insurance Act was passed in 1948 and the British Columbia Hospital Insurance Service (BCHIS) was established as a branch of the Department of Health and Welfare in 1949. B.C. was the second province to introduce hospital insurance legislation. The government was criticized because of problems in administering the plan, which lead to a legislative inquiry. The name changed to Hospital Programs in 1975.
