Biographical history

The British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Revelstoke, by command of the Provincial Secretary’s Office, 28 May 1900, effective 25 June 1900.

The courthouse at Revelstoke was closed on 31 May 2002 and operated as a temporary circuit court of Salmon Arm between June and July 2002. The court closed again but re-opened as a permanent circuit court of Salmon Arm on 5 February 2003.

Biographical history

[Archivist’s Note: The history of the County Court at Revelstoke needs to be determined. It is known that a registrar of the County Court of Kootenay, held at Revelstoke, existed at least as early as December 1898. Source: Order-in-Council #0637-1898, December 19, 1898].

In 1965, by Order-in-Council 1502-1965, effective July 1, 1965, a registry of the County Court of Yale was established at Revelstoke.

Custodial history

The records were transferred to the Salmon Arm court registry following the closure of the registry at Revelstoke. Records in accession 83-0539 are likely the same records referred to in accession 83-1039.

Scope and content

The series consists of civil court orders issued by the Revelstoke Supreme Court and the County Court of Yale between 1953 and 1995. Orders are a formal expression of the court’s will, and orders in this series cover a variety of civil issues, including adoptions, foreclosures, family maintenance, divorce, letters of administration, consent orders, and will disputes.

The records arrived at the Archives in shannon folders, and were placed in acid-free folders. Researchers should note that Revelstoke appears to have restarted numbering volumes from 1 at the beginning of each year, with the result that there are multiple volume 1s. Researchers should use the volume and folio numbers in conjunction with the year of the order they are looking for.
