History

The museum was established in Victoria on October 25, 1886, as “Provincial Museum of Natural History and Anthropology.” It was later named the “British Columbia Provincial Museum.” The name was changed again on October 13, 1987, to “Royal British Columbia Museum.” The Royal BC Museum was made a crown corporation in 2003. As of the year 2015, under the Museum Act, the corporation was responsible for the Royal BC Museum and the provincial archives
