History

The Royal Cariboo Hospital was established in 1863 as the Williams Creek Hospital in response to a typhoid epidemic. The original hospital had only three rooms, but was expanded on a new site in 1891. In 1925 a hospital opened at Wells, but it was too small and in 1935, the old hospital in Barkerville was reopened as the Royal Cariboo General Hospital. In 1936, the hospital was destroyed by fire and never reopened.
