Custodial history

Scope and content

The commissioner, Vancouver barrister and solicitor, John Alexander Grimmett, was appointed to inquire into the operation and administration of societies which operate in B.C. under the provisions of the Societies Act and offer benefits or services for accident or sickness. The records consist of the Provincial Secretary file 145-19 which contains correspondence, vouchers, copy of Letters Patent appointing the Commissioner, transcripts of evidence presented at the proceedings, briefs and exhibits. Also included is the report in which he recommended that the societies should be compelled to become licensed under the Insurance Act because they operate for the sole purpose of insuring members and carrying on an insurance business.
