Biographical history
Commonly known as the McKenna–McBride Commission, a joint commission appointed by the Dominion Government and the Government of the Province of British Columbia. Established by a memorandum of agreement arrived at between J.A.J. McKenna, special commissioner appointed by the Government of Canada and Richard McBride, as premier of B.C. Investigated the conditions of Indian affairs to try to settle the question of Indian reserves in British Columbia. Two commissioners were appointed by the Dominion Government, and two by the Provincial Government. These four commissioners selected a fifth who was appointed to act as chairman. Appointed April 23, 1913; report dated June 30, 1916
Custodial history
Custodial history unknown for albums accessioned as 198904-002 and 198904-004, the albums were found in the Provincial Archives visual records unit in April 1989 but had probably been in the custody of the Archives for decades.
Album accessioned as 198112-001 was purchased in 1981.
Scope and content
The series consists of three photograph albums created by the Royal Commission on Indian Affairs between 1913 and 1916. The albums may have been created as display or presentation albums for specific commissioners. Many of the photographs in the albums duplicate each other and were also used in the published report of the commission.
