Biographical history

Royal Lethington Maitland came to B.C. with his parents when he was a child. He was called to the B.C. Bar in 1913. In 1915 he became City Prosecutor for Vancouver and in 1928 he was appointed King's Counsel. In 1928 he successfully ran for MLA in Vancouver and was appointed Minister without portfolio, serving until 1933. In 1937, he returned to politics and was chosen as leader of the provincial Conservative Party. In 1941, Maitland was reelected and with Premier John Hart formed a coalition government. He served in that government as Attorney-General. He died in office.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence, speech notes, speeches and addresses and legal briefs and correspondence relating to the trial and appeal of Frank Davis, co-defendant charged with the 1913 murder of Constable Archibald.
