The series consists of records with regard to Royal visits created by the Dept. of the Provincial Secretary between 1939 and 1959. The records include correspondence, circulars, programmes, press releases, menus, etc. concerning the visit to British Columbia by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, 1939. Also includes programmes re: 1958 visit of the Princess Margaret and the visit of H.M. the Queen and Prince Philip in 1959.

The series also contains 2 photographs of paintings and some maps.

Royal Hudson

The item is a composite print of a travelogue from around 1977. It depicts the popular excursion run made by Royal Hudson steam locomotive 2860 between North Vancouver and Squamish on Howe Sound. Includes colour footage from the May 1939 Royal Visit.

Royal Visit 1939 scrapbooks

The series consists of scrapbooks created by Hubert Lethaby documenting all aspects of the Royal Visit to Canada in 1939 of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother). The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically and document each leg of the tour. Photographs, seals, stamps, air mail envelopes, provincial and city crests, and signatures of officials are included throughout the volumes.

The first volume provides and overview of the entire tour, and includes several sheets of various special issue Royal Visit postage stamps. This volume also covers the Quebec portion of the tour. The second volume covers Ottawa and Ontario, the third volume covers Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, the fourth volume covers British Columbia, and the fifth volume covers Washington D.C., New York City, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.

Scenes include: Huge parade of veterans with crowds near Pattullo Bridge in New Westminster, a building across the street called "Pacific Motors". [Steamship] "Prince Robert" leaving Victoria. "Will ye no come back again" captioned across the sky. People on the breakwater, Victoria, watching the ship carry the Royal couple back to Vancouver. Planes fly over Lion's Gate Bridge, Vancouver. Children dance around the maypole to honour the King and Queen. Crowds of people. Parade of veterans. King and Queen, preceded and followed by many cars, drive around a curve in the road. A ceremonial Welcome arch in Saanich. A sign reading "Saanich School Children", kids waving flags. Forest Service out-footage and duplicates from their filming of the Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Vancouver and Victoria in May 1939. Scenes include: Motorcade to the front steps of the Parliament Buildings, Victoria. Bunting on Victoria City Hall. Bunting and flags in Oak Bay. Black cars in clogged street, bunting on buildings, one says "C.C. Brown Motors" -- Esquimalt? Pipe band marches down crowded street. In Vancouver, a series of welcoming banners stretched across the streets from "The Sons and Daughters of England", "Israel's Throne", "Sons of Norway", "Municipality of Maple Ridge" and "Port Coquitlam". At Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, the King and Queen leave the reviewing stand with Premier Pattullo and other VIPs. The King inspects the Guard of Honour. Sailors march past. King and Queen leave, move up Government Street by open car to Empress Hotel. King and Queen arrive at Empress Hotel for "luncheon". King presents colours to RCN Honour Guard in Beacon Hill Park. Sailors march past, King George takes salute. May 31, shots of the "Prince Robert". On the wharf, hundreds of veterans. King inspects Honour Guard. Royal visit to Victoria, B.C., May 29/31, 1939

Amateur film. REEL 1: Rehearsal for presentation of colours, and troops drilling. The Fifth Regiment Guard of Honour rehearsing at the Parliament Buildings. King and Queen leave the Parliament Building on May 30 to drive through the city, returning later down Government Street. The Royal Canadian Navy at Beacon Hill Park; presentation of the colour by the King. King inspects war veterans. Queen with Prime Minister Mackenzie King and Premier Pattullo. REEL 2: Naval party returns to the RCN Barracks, Esquimalt, to deposit the colours. Officers, sailors and guests disperse for refreshments. Ogden Point Docks, May 31. Destroyer escort. The King and Queen arrive, inspect Canadian Scottish Guard of Honour, war veterans, and war nurses. King and Queen board the C.N.S.S. "Prince Robert" and are seen waving from the deck. An hour later, Premuier Pattullo inspects the BC Provincial Police and special constables outside the Parliament Buildings.

The item is a film news reel from 1939 of the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Canada and the United States. "The Castle Films production of the entire visit is [black and white] and is about 360 feet long. The sections filmed in British Columbia show the Royal Hudson pulling into Vancouver (with a good shot of the engine and tender); the Guard of Honour in Vancouver; the arrival and departure of the King and Queen; the arrival and departure of the King and Queen at Vancouver City Hall; and the arrival of the King and Queen at the Parliament Buildings, Victoria, and the inspection of the Honour Guard by King George. The BC Dept. of Agriculture footage is on colour stock and is 140 feet long. Scenes include: the yellow convertible and the King and Queen's limousine driving through the crowds on Government Street in Victoria. Victoria City Hall. Crowds at the Parliament Buildings.
