History

John Savannah, popular Victoria portrait photographer, was born Jacob Savannah in San Francisco California June 25, 1868. He was the oldest son of Edward and Rosa Savannah, who were originally from Prussia. Jacob Savannah is listed in the San Francisco 1885-1886 directory as a clerk to John Porcher, a hatter.

He came to Victoria around 1889 and was listed in the city directory that year as a "portrait artist" at the Hastings Studio on Fort St. in Victoria. By 1894 he had his own studio and received a rave review in the newspaper for his artistic photography exhibit (Victoria Daily Colonist, October 7, 1894). He married California born Maud Middleton in Seattle in November 1894, the ceremony being performed by Rabbi Dr. Rubenstein. Their son, Edward Jack Savannah was born in Victoria in February 1898.

John (Jack) Savannah continued as a well-known and successful portrait photographer in Victoria and lived with his family in a house at the corner of Cook and Rockland Streets. On April 28, 1925, Savannah died very suddenly of a heart attack while playing golf at the Uplands Golf Links in Oak Bay.
