Ada Dawe interview : [Chapman, 1976]

SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Ada Dawe : Vancouver Harbour PERIOD COVERED: 1900-1930 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1976 SUMMARY: Ada Dawe was born in Vancouver in 1893 and lived at Sechelt until school age. Her father was a captain on the Empress boats. Remembers being aboard the "Empress of India" at the time of the collision of the "Princess Victoria" and the "Chehalis", including first aid and the later search for bodies. Recalls rowing from Sechelt to Vancouver; Chinese crews on Empress boats; early Vancouver waterfront; Cedar Cove; Tommy Roberts of the Grand Hotel; and Union Steamship resorts on the Sechelt Peninsula.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-06-17 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Ada Dawe recalls her father Thomas John Cook; his arrival in Sechelt in 1893; Bert Whittaker and his store and hotel and steamships; more on steamships, the "Comox"; waiting for ships circa 1910 to 1914; and fishing. TRACK 2: Mrs. Dawe continues describing the arrival of nuns from France, Order of the Infant Jesus [Sisters of the Child Jesus], with Mother Superior Theresine in 190;3; the building of the Indian residential school in 1905; more on native Indians, including their appearance and their brass band; prominent Indians including Jack Isadore and Chief Julius and Chief A;lf August; the school for white children in 1912; Christmas festivities; roads to Porpoise Bay; Gibsons and Pender Harbour; and her impressions of loggers.

Archibald McKinlay Diary Part 1

File consists of one diary of Archibald McKinlay, the first of two. The diary spans November 3, 1876 to February 9, 1877 and documents McKinlay's travels to reserves as reserve commissioner and includes copies of correspondence, basic census information for Indigenous communities, and translations of Indigenous languages.

SUMMARY: "The Inland Sea" is number 12 in the series. A tour of the Gulf of Georgia, with stories of the people and places on the Gulf; including the Gulf Islands, Nanaimo, Comox, and inlets on the mainland. Stories of the coastal boats. Voices heard include: Ruth Jackson, Ada Dawe, Ida New, Freda New, Constance Swartz, Bea Freeman, Dorothy Richardson, Geraldine Hulbert, Jud Johnstone, Clarence Joe, Joe Kneen, Ronald Norris, Donald New and Bill Law. The opening narrative about a sailboat in the gulf is drawn from reminiscences of Harry Roberts of Cape Coburn.

New Westminster District appraisals of reverted land

The series consists of appraisal reports of reverted lands from the New Westminster land district, 1931 to 1932. These reports are in two volumes and are divided into arbitrary land areas labeled "F", "E", "G", and "H". Reports are arranged numerically by report number. Information may include assessment district, land registry office, legal description, date of forfeiture, plan number, acreage, suitability, improvements, soil, water supply, irrigation or diking, accessibility, nearest settlement or Post Office, nearest school, topography, and assessed and appraised value. The report usually includes a coloured sketch map of the property. The information is indexed by District Lot number to report number.

Ron Whittaker interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-06 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Ron F. Whittaker describes his arrival in Sechelt in 1892, and his brother Bert Whittaker's trading post. He continues with more on his brother's business enterprises such as logging and; steam shipping and work with hotels. He describes the Whittaker family and then the 1905 boom in Sechelt; relations with Indians the arrival of French nuns in 1903; Peter Levesque; Ron's father Alfred Whittaker; the development of Sechelt and logging.
