Administrative history
St Joseph’s Mission was established by the Oblate Fathers south of Williams Lake in the San Jose Valley in 1866. For four years, the Fathers allowed the local Native community to live nearby, but in 1870 they were moved across the San Jose River to a large meadow given to them by the Oblates. In 1895, the Mission built the Church of the Immaculate Conception on the Sugar Cane Reserve. The Mission eventually came to include a church, cemetery, and later, a Residential School.
