Administrative history
The Board of Steamboat Inspection was established by the government of Canada in 1868 under the Steamboat Inspection Act (SC 1868, c. 65) to provide rules and regulations “for the uniform inspection of steamboats, the selection of ports for inspection, and granting of licenses to engineers.” In British Columbia, steamboat inspection became mandatory in 1873 (SC 1873, c. 53). Prior to that, boiler inspections were carried out under the authority of the Surveyor Generals for the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. The provincial Dept. of Lands and Works took over responsibilities for the function from 1871 to 1873. In 1906, the Steamboat Inspection Act was repealed (RSC 1906, Schedule A). From that time the Board of Steamboat Inspectors came under the Canada Shipping Act (SC 1906, c. 113). The name changed to Board of Steamship Inspection in 1932.
