Scope and content

SUMMARY: "Studio '74" was a radio series that presented avant-garde experimental theatre adapted from stage plays and short stories by new and established national and international writers. The CBC Times provides the following description "[Studio '74] is in rather free workshop style, employing fairly modern techniques and improvisations which lend themselves well to interesting voice and sound production". The series was first broadcast in the spring of 1969. "Stephen" is a play for two voices by Santo Cervello, with Neil Dainard as the boy and Marti Maraden as the girl. In June 1959, twelve-year-old Lynne Harper was raped and murdered near the town of Clinton, Ontario. Fourteen-year-old boy Steven Truscott was charged with the crime, convicted in a local trial and sentenced to be hanged. The death sentence was commuted by the Federal Cabinet, and despite further appeals by Truscott's attorneys, the boy remained in prison for ten years. In October 1969, Steven Truscott was released on parole at the age of twenty-four.;
