History

Lillian Sweeney, nee Clarke, contributed to the art scene in Victoria and to study of natural history the Province of BC during the mid-twentieth century. Born in Winnipeg, MB, Clarke moved to Victoria in 1904. She married Willian Henry Pumphrey Sweeney in 1912.

In 1922, Sweeney, with artists Margaret Kitto and Dora Donogh, began operating out of the Deco Art Studio and was active in various artistic and social circles throughout the decade. These included: the Island Arts and Crafts Society, Women’s Canadian Club, The BC Indian Arts and Welfare Society, and Thetis Park Protection Association. In 1935, Sweeney became an Assistant Preparator at the Provincial Museum. By the end of her 10-year tenure she became known as the museum’s “resident artist.” Sweeney’s work for the Natural History and Anthropology Departments included producing to-scale 3D models of various fish species, flora and prehistoric mammals as well as exhibition dioramas. Her exhibition artwork was on display in the museum until the creation of the new museum building in 1969.
