Biographical history

Thomas Frederick (Fred) Seldon was born in Kilkampton, Devon, England in 1871 and was raised on the family farm at Elmsworthy. He apprenticed as a marine engineer with Tyneside Engine Works Ltd. at Cardiff and was at sea between 1894 and 1897. In 1898 Seldon left England for the Klondike gold fields via British Columbia. In 1899 he went to Ingersoll, Ontario where he married and remained until 1910. In 1911 he and his family moved to Clayburn, near Abbotsford where he ran a general store and kept a farm. He died in December 1937.

Original diaries donated by George Seldon in 2003. Photocopy of transcript of letters and diaries received via the Legislative Library in 2002.

Scope and content

The fonds conists of four notebook diaries kept by Thomas Frederick Seldon between May 12, 1898 and November 10, 1899 recording his experiences while travelling to the Yukon Territory via the Teslin Route, including the Stikine River, and mining and living in northwestern BC. Also included is a photocopy of a transcript of the diaries and Seldon's letters to his parents in England. This transcript was made in 1996 by Betty and George Seldon.
