Adventure along the Trans-Canada Highway

The item is a composite film print of a travelogue produced by Guided Tour Productions, ca. 1960. It depicts a trip from Ottawa to the Pacific coast by Greyhound Bus. BC footage includes: Rogers Pass, the Thompson/Okanagan Region, Vancouver (Stanley Park, Lion's Gate Bridge), Victoria (Empress Hotel etc.) and the Butchart Gardens.

Alfred Drinkell interview

CALL NUMBER: T0314:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-07-23 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Alfred Joseph Drinkell tells some stories about the history of the Dog Creek area of the Cariboo, from 1860 to 1914. Drinkell discusses his arrival in BC in 1911. He describes the ranches he worked at around Ashcroft, Joseph Smith's place, and his financial problems and life before he came to BC. He tells anecdotes about Judge Begbie. He tells a story about Samsome, a local doctor, and the legendary packer Jean Caux ("Cataline").

TRACK 2: Drinkell relates the story of Cataline's last trip and describes many trails in the area. He speaks of Joy Sim, a Chinese doctor, and pioneer medicine. He discusses some of Cataline's packers: Robbins, Wiggins Dan Smith, and the first settlers in the area. He describes the Hudson's Bay Trail, freighting, roads in the area, stories about Phil Grinder of Jesmond, a local school teacher, and educated people.

He offers the background of the Gang Ranch and describes cattle drives, the Duke Of York, a Barkerville bartender, and local Indians.

TRACK 2: Drinkell discusses cowboys, social life and Christmas. Then he mentions Indian-White relationships and a story about Indians and the law. He discusses the Chilcotin and Shuswap Indians, problems with the reserve system, Chinese settlers in the Dog Creek area, and the importance of Chinese in the area. Finally, Drinkell tells the story of five Indian women who killed themselves over a white man, and how nails and gold dust were used as money.

Archaeology projects in British Columbia, 1972 : miscellaneous sites

The file consists of 21 film reels of unedited footage shot by filmmakers working under an Opportunities For Youth (OFY) grant to document archaeological projects all over British Columbia. These 21 reels record archaeological excavation work during the summer of 1972, in the following areas: F1992:07/010-013: Williams Lake/Riske Creek -- camp scenes, botanical collecting, area scenery, and work at site(s). F1992:07/014-016: Kamloops -- North Kamloops flood scenes, OFY survey team, crew moving camp, OFY camp and activities, excavation site and flooding. More flood scenes, clearing river debris, etc. Labelling and recording artifacts in lab. Kamloops Museum: interview with curator; kids on school tour. [Beginning of trip to Hazelton, 1928]

Amateur film. In summer 1928, two carloads of travellers drive from Kamloops to Hazelton and return, filming highlights of their trip. These include the Cariboo Road, Barkerville, Bear Lake, Summit Lake, Stuart Lake, Fort St. James, Bulkley River, Telkwa River, and Skeena River. Footage from this trip is continued on film F1984:01/05.

The film highlights the Thompson and North Thompson regions, the Yellowhead and the Rockies, approaching from Vancouver via the Fraser Canyon. Footage includes white water rafting, Nicola Valley cattle ranching, fishing, Kamloops, North Thompson Overlander Raft Race, Wells Gray and Mount Robson Provincial Parks, Shuswap Lake, Three Valley Gap, Canyon Hot Springs, Rogers Pass and mountain climbing.

This film was produced by the Ministry of Tourism to replace the externally-produced "Majesty of water". Footage from the latter film was used, and the original producer was credited with photography.

T0552:0001 track 1: Mr. Gibson tells story of his grandfather, Charles Henry Gibson, who came to Ashcroft in 1897. Discusses his grandfather's career as an entrepreneur and rancher; he was one of the leading citizens of early Ashcroft. Father was educated in private school in Victoria. Mother's family described. Family ranches sold out in 1951. Relations between Chinese and Indigenous people.

Floodplain mapping : Thompson and South Thompson Rivers

Series consists of floodplain maps that of the Thompson and South Thompson Rivers between Kamloops and Chase. The Water Investigations Branch created these maps between 1973 and 1975 to document areas that were susceptible to flooding.

The maps were bound in a volume and were numbered sequentially. There is an index at the front of the volume. Each map is also stamped with the Surveys and Mapping Branch of the BC Lands Service since the floodplain information was overlaid on maps that were originally maps were originally created in 1970 and 1973. All maps are 65 x 92 cm.

There are two groupings of maps. The first 33 maps show the Kamloops area from 1973-1974. These have a 1:2500 scale. These maps are stamped with the project number 73-81-0 and the file number 161673.

The second grouping consists of 27 maps of the South Thompson River from Kamloops to Chase. These have a 1:5000 scale. The project number of these maps is 74-109t-0.
