Biographical history

Tom Fyles was born in England in 1887. He emigrated to British Columbia in 1910, settling in the Kitsilano Beach area in south Vancouver. In 1922 Fyles married Margaret Gladstone. By late 1913 Fyles worked for the Post Office as a letter carrier. Fyles is renowned as a mountain climber and outdoors enthusiast. Mount Fyles near Bella Coola is named in his honour. He was an early member of the BC Mountaineering Club, and almost single-handedly ran their club hikes for several years. In the late 1920s he joined the Alpine Club of Canada. In the 1930s he and others embarked on expeditions to Bute Inlet, to the headwaters of the Lillooet River and the Toba River. Tom Fyles is one of a handful of early climbers in the province who were leaders in terms of inspiration and accomplishments. His climbs were geographically scattered, radiating outwards from his home town of Vancouver to many areas in south western BC and also to the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains and across the border to Mt. Baker. He died in 1979.

Custodial history
