Alfred Bryant interview

Mr. Bryant discusses his father's background; coming to settle in BC in 1919; life and incidents at Soda Creek and Meldrum Creek; how his family worked at a hotel in Riske Creek; teamsters; the Bechers, who ran the hotel and details of a journey to a homestead at Tatla Lake in 1922. TRACK 2: Mr. Bryant continues the story of the journey to Tatla Lake; his first days at Tatla Lake and the cabin there; sleeping arrangements, his first .22 calibre rifle; life at Tatla Lake; and social occasions.

RECORDED: [location unknown], [1967?] SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Andy Christensen begins by discussing preparations for the visit of Lord Tweedsmuir to the park named after him (ca. 1937). The rest of the interview consists of Christensen's recollections about the development of ranching around Anahim Lake including the establishment of his own ranch (1930) and trading post. His recollections include packtrain routes from Bella Coola as early as 1914, the beauty and wildlife around Anahim Lake, fur trading with the Indians, his partner Adolf Shilling, and the story of Pemberton's effort to start a ranching empire. Others mentioned are his brother Helmar Christensen, Chief Squinas (sp?), Stanley Dahling, Chief Anahim and Lester Dorsey. [TRACK 2: blank.]

The item consists of a composite print of a nature film, made from 1957 to 1962. A fictional narrator uses motion picture camera to track big game in Tweedsmuir Park and Cassiar district. Subjects include mountain caribou, mountain goats, grizzly bear, California bighorn sheep, whitetail deer, elk, stone sheep, moose and Osborn caribou.

Maps and drawings

The series consists of maps and other drawings, created or acquired by Tommy Walker between ca. 1929 and 1974. With a few exceptions, the maps are all purchased copies of maps published by various departments within the Canadian or British Columbia governments. Many of these maps have been annotated by Walker, in pen and pencil. He traced various routes and trails, added notes and showed other information with his annotations. Most of the maps depict the Tweedsmuir and Spatsizi areas. In some cases, Walker purchased several maps and taped them together to form one big map. Another of the maps of the Spatsizi Plateau is hand drawn in pencil.

In addition to the maps, the series includes five hand drawn plans from 1970, of Walker's house at Smithers.

SUMMARY: This program recalls some events at the upper end of the Bella Coola Valley -- the building (in 1953) of a road by Bella Coola residents who grew tired of being isolated, and Lord Tweedsmuir's visit to the valley in 1937. Voices heard include: Caroline Moffat, Molly Walker, Cliff Kopas, Wally Stiles, Alfred Bryant, Wilf Christensen, and Gaston Bazille.

Phyllis Kellis interview

CALL NUMBER: T0611:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-07-21 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Phyllis Bryant Kellis recalls some of her experiences homesteading in the Cariboo-Chilcotin area, 1919 to 1928. Mrs. Kellis offers a description of her rail journey to Clinton, her first few months in the area, her experience working for Mr. Becher at a hotel in Riske Creek, the ranch at Soda Creek, the story of how her wagon burned on the way to Tatla Lake, a detailed description of her journey to Tatla Lake, her first Christmas there, her life there and hard times at Soda Creek. TRACK 2: Mrs. Kellis discloses more details of life at Tatla Lake: school, stages, a description of her cabin there. She describes how the arrival of mail was seen as a social event, an unfriendly neighbor, an encounter with a traveling pianist while playing for a dance at Soda Creek, her move to Williams Lake and her music.
