Biographical history
The Unemployment Relief Branch began in the summer of 1931 when the Government of British Columbia created a committee of the Executive Council called the Unemployment Relief Committee. This committee, with the Minister of Labour as Chair, also included the Minister of Public Works, the Provincial Secretary and the Minister of Finance. The purpose of the committee was to set up a system of direct relief for unemployed men and to work with the Federal and Municipal governments regarding programs and finance for same. Registration for relief was conducted by the Employment Service of Canada in conjunction with Government Agents, Provincial Police, District Engineers and Municipal Relief Officers. 237 work camps were erected and equipped. The "Relief Act" of 1933 transferred the work to the Unemployment Relief Branch under the Dept. of Labour where it continued until at least 1939.
Custodial history
Custodial history unknown but presumed to have been transferred to the Archives from the Ministry of Human Resources in the 1980s. Found in the stacks in 2022.
Scope and content

The file include: National Employment Commission manual of procedure for registering relief recipients (1936); circulars sent out to officials, municipalities and government agents, applications for farm workers, applications for placement on a farm and relief case cards listing names of farm workers, their assigned farm and details of allowance (1936-1939). It also includes correspondence files relating to the Salt Spring Island Community Farm (1940-1941).
