TRACK 2: Mr. Roberts continues with a description of the Stave Falls work camp including: characters, living conditions and topics of discussion. Bessie S. Dickinson interview

The item consists of an audio interview with Bessie Dickinson recorded in Vancouver, B.C. on August 29, 1984.

Tape summary:
Track 1: Bessie Dickinson was born in Arden, Manitoba on September 8, 1892. She was a domestic science teacher from 1920 to 1953. She first taught at Strathcona School in Vancouver and in 1927 she went over to Templeton Junior High where she taught until 1953. She took her training at MacDonald Institute in Guelph, Ontario from 1918-1920. Explains how she decided to go into domestic science. Also describes the different courses taken in her domestic science training as well as the physical layout of the cooking classroom. She describes the philosophy of domestic science that was taught to the girls. She discusses her teaching experiences at Strathcona and Templeton, especially the sewing classes that she taught at the latter.

Track 2: Bessie continues her discussion of sewing classes at Templeton. Girls were also taught about childcare -- how to hold a baby and how to bath a baby. She explains why domestic science was taught to girls in junior high and high school.

The item is an answer print of an industrial film from 1979. It shows the creation of electrical energy from garbage or forest wastes and gas from fermentation. A fascinating study of the possibilities available to us in the conversion of biomass from a refuse problem into an energy source. The Iona Island Sewage Treatment Plant is featured.

Bishop A.H. Sovereign interview

Black-bound sketchbook "B"

One sketchbook with 33 drawings by Emily Carr within. The images include cartoons with verse, posed models. Pages of poetry includes "The Olsson Student" which refers to a separate series of images (PDP06117 to PDP06124) created by Carr, presumably also in 1904 depicting Carr's life in St Ives 1901-1902. Sketches and cartoons set in both Vancouver and Victoria are also included here.

Born 1902 - like Johnny Walker, still going strong / Arthur G. Builder

The item is a 38 page autobiography by Arthur G. Builder titled "Born 1902 - like Johnny Walker, still going strong". Mr. Builder emigrated from England to Canada in 1923, worked at various jobs in the Kootenays, Vancouver and Port Coquitlam and the Okanagan, and in Nova Scotia. He served in the Canadian army in England during World War II and spent much of his time in England until 1973 when he returned first to the Okanagan and then to Victoria.

Bridge River

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made between ca. 1945 and 1948. It shows the first phase of the Bridge River Project including construction of the Bridge River diversion dam, Seton Lake powerhouse, penstock on Mission Mountain, and power transmission lines to Vancouver; site preparation for La Joie storage dam and opening of first phase on 23 October 1948. There is also footage of Vancouver and vicinity emphasizing demand for electrical power.

British Columbia : of their doings their by one of them

The item is a large, illustrated volume titled "British Columbia: of their doings there by one of them" by Frederick D. Williams. The volume contains a manuscript account of a journey from London, England to Vancouver B.C. and back between August 28 and October 6, 1897. Williams landed in New York and travelled by train through Chicago and Spokane to Nelson where he and his party took the Kootenay Lake steamer to Kaslo and the train to Sandon and then on up to Nakusp and Revelstoke, Kamloops and Vancouver.

The volume has been illustrated by glued in photographs, magazine prints, maps, menus, passenger lists and programs.

British Columbia Electric : streetcars & streetcar track removal

The item consists of unedited film footage from 1955 on two rolls. It contains footage of the demise of BC Electric's last Vancouver streetcar run. The first roll shows streetcars in operation at various points along Hastings Street from Granville Street to the Kootenay Loop exchange, 18 April 1955. The second roll, shot shortly afterward, shows crews removing the streetcar tracks along Hastings and repaving the street.
