The file consists of several typed pages and an excerpt of a handwritten letter by J.T. Walbran to an unknown correspondent with the initials WPQ. The letter indicates that "before leaving the Quadra, Mr. Keefer asked [Walbran] to give...a short account of the early history of Victoria, Nanaimo [and] Vancouver to embody in a report of his on the seaports of this coast which he has been asked to prepare by his Department at Ottawa."

Records relating to Special Constables under the Railway Act

The series consists of applications, certificates of appointment, oaths, certificates of dismissal and indexes for Special Constables under the Railway Act filed at the Vancouver Court Registry between 1903 and 1996. Appointments were made by a Vancouver Police Magistrate or a Vancouver Stipendiary Magistrate (or Deputy) or the Chief Commissioner of Police for the Dominion of Canada on the recommendation of member of the Department of Investigation for the railway company. Certificates of dismissal were issued by the Superintendent or an Inspector of the Department of Investigation of the railway company. This collection has records for the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Canadian National Railway, the Great Northern Railway and Via Rail Canada.

The series consists of a record book created by the Vancouver Immigration Dept. in 1903. Between 1900 and 1908, British Columbia passed nine acts which empowered officials to require prospective immigrants to pass a written test in any language of Europe prior to admission. Of the nine acts, eight were disallowed by the federal government and one (1907) was reserved by the Lieutenant-Governor.

The book records the names and passport numbers of Japanese passengers coming into the Port of Vancouver, the date of arrival, the name of the ship, where the passenger was from, and whether or not they were allowed to pass into Canada.

This series consists of printed records relating to the following court cases: the Attorney General of the Province of British Columbia versus Theodore Ludgate, and the Attorney General of the Dominion of Canada regarding ownership of Deadman's Island, Burrard Inlet.

Records include Attorney-General vs. Ludgate report by Robert Cassidy to the Attorney General for British Columbia on the appeal of the Dominion of Canada from the 1901 judgment of Martin, J. (Queen's Printer, 1904, 7 p.). The series also includes various exhibits and other records, such as exhibit 6, "Extracts from blue book containing papers relating to the affairs of British Columbia, 1859-1864" (pp. 307-307(81)); "Evidence before Full Court in addition to that taken at trial" and Exhibits V,W,X,Y (pp. 366-430); reasons for judgment of Chief Justice Gordon Hunter, Justice M.W. Tyrwhitt Drake, and Justice P. A. Irving (pp. 431-445); and B.C. Supreme Court decisions (pp. 446-449). Box 2 contains several duplicates of pp. 307-307(81) and pp. 366-450.

Black-bound sketchbook "B"

One sketchbook with 33 drawings by Emily Carr within. The images include cartoons with verse, posed models. Pages of poetry includes "The Olsson Student" which refers to a separate series of images (PDP06117 to PDP06124) created by Carr, presumably also in 1904 depicting Carr's life in St Ives 1901-1902. Sketches and cartoons set in both Vancouver and Victoria are also included here.

Item consists of a mount of four landscape photographs adhered to card to create a panoramic view of Vancouver. Image depicts empty fields, commercial and domestic buildings, a waterfront, and distant mountains. "Vancouver 1905" is captioned on the card in white ink.

A.G. Harvey papers

The series consists of notes and correspondence pertaining to Harvey's career as Reeve of Point Grey and Vancouver City alderman (1909-1935). It includes draft bills, reports, and newspaper cuttings re town planning and Point Grey's amalgamation with Vancouver in 1929. The series also includes manuscripts, notes, and correspondence pertaining to Harvey's work as an historian with files on John Robson, Amor de Cosmos, David Douglas, and Mt. Robson and extensive notes on B.C. place names and early post offices. The papers have been arranged under four main categories: personal papers, notes and correspondence pertaining to civic affairs, literary and historical articles and notes, and notes concerning British Columbia place names.

New Westminster District auction sale records

This series consists of duplicate auctioneers records for auction sales of Crown land in the New Westminster Land District. Sales include: Hastings townsite District lot 540, 1906; North Vancouver, District Lot 2027 in Group 1, 1906; and in 1908, a further sale of lands in North Vancouver. Information may include date of sale, name and address of highest bidder and amount bid, deposit, and terms of sale. Also included is a copy of the brochure detailing the forthcoming sale and a summary of receipts for the 1906 sale.
