Amateur film. Miscellaneous footage taken during the time that Miss Gerry worked as a nurse for the federal Dept. of Indian and Northern Affairs. Includes footage of Indian reserves and villages, celebrations and school children; a First Communion procession at St. Paul's Indian Catholic Church in North Vancouver; hospital and clinic scenes; residential schools and Coqualeetza Indian School and Hospital; Cariboo highway and scenery; Williams Lake Stampede; etc. Also includes OUR CARIBOO NEIGHBORS, a discrete two-reel film that depicts a 1941 automobile journey to visit Indian reserves and missions in the Cariboo. The item is a composite print of a promotional film made in 1976. The film follows a group of American investors as they take a brief trip around B.C. to examine the province's economic opportunities and potential, its resources and markets. The province's major industries (forest products, mining/smelting, fishing/canning, agriculture) are discussed, and the importance to industry of B.C. Hydro's electrical energy resources is highlighted. Includes sequences on Vancouver, shipping facilities, B.C. Ferries, Victoria and area, Bennett Dam, Site One, Mica Dam project construction, Kootenay Canal, Hat Creek coal deposits and exploration, export/trade with the Pacific Rim, and Roberts Bank coal port.

Includes fishing boats at dock; crewmen examining and mending nets and preparing boats; Vancouver skyline from waterfront; many shots of fishing fleet under way and leaving Vancouver harbour (passing under Lion's Gate bridge); a CPR ferry; blocks of ice en route to the boats. (The fishing boats include "Aleutian Queen", "Combat" and "Pacific Belle".) The roll concludes with footage showing a fisheries technician counting fingerlings at Cultus Lake.

The item consists of an audio interview with H.H. Stevens, recorded in 1966.

Meagaw. He describes Vernon; local residents; farms; ranches and the Aberdeen Ranch.

Highways to splendor

The item is a composite print of a travelogue film from ca. 1970. It depicts a scenic trip on the "Queen of Prince Rupert" from Kelsey Bay to Prince Rupert introducing such destinations as Vancouver, Victoria and the Cariboo. Includes shots of Active Pass, Barkerville, Campbell River and the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. The Inside Passage and the province's highways are seen as parallel north-south "highways."

Ladner ferry, etc.

The item consists of a reel of unedited film footage and associated workprint of water traffic on the south arm of the Fraser River near the site of the Deas Island Tunnel. Two sequences show the operation of the Ladner ferry, a car ferry service crossing the Fraser between Ladner and Woodwards Landing in Richmond. Shows cars, trucks, and buses boarding the ferry; crew at work on the deck and the bridge; views from ferry during the crossing; docking and unloading; etc. Also includes footage of the CNR rail car ferry S.S. "Canora"; a large floating dredge; and the sternwheeler "Essington". The latter usually operated out of Prince Rupert as a snag puller, but at this time she was replacing the "Samson V" on the Fraser; her deckhands are shown servicing a navigational buoy.
These sequences were found among the original footage and out-takes from the film Deas Island Tunnel (1957-1959).

  1. Bennett ferry outs; handover ceremonies for the M.V. "Queen of Nanaimo", 1964, in Victoria's Inner Harbour. Premier W.A.C. Bennett comes on board and is shown at the helm with a young boy.
  2. Trudeau opens superport, aerial shots of Roberts Bank coal port; speakers' platform with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Premier W.A.C. Bennett; tour of facility by guests; shots of coal mining (Kaiser equipment).
  3. Unedited footage outs, shots of Vancouver city, area, harbour and surrounding scenery, including the North Shore mountains, as seen from the Pacific Centre Tower.
  4. Outs showing the freighter called "Snow Ball" unloading Japanese oranges in Vancouver, 1973.
  5. Outs showing outside and inside Hercules aircraft operated by Pacific Western Airlines.
