Scope and content

Item consists of a photograph of the shoreline at Alert Bay (Yalis) and shows the steamer Princess Louise at dock.

Notes area

Physical condition

The negative is missing emulsion in a small area on one of the stereo images. There is also paper attached to the glass plate negative in that region. These conditions result in a minor loss of the visual information on the plate in those regions. This negative has been manipulated. A section of the photograph (on the canoe) has been filled in to cover a gap in the emulsion that has a rectangular shape similar to a paper photographic caption.

General note

From: "Maynard Collection Box 7.7 #86: Indians"

This negative was formerly housed in an original negative box with label: “Box 7.7 Indians: Alert Bay. Bella Coola. Smith’s Inlet. Haidas.”

General note

The photograph was previously identified as being created in 1874, during an HMS Boxer expedition. The date is more likely either 1879, 1884, or 1888. The steamer Princess Louise can be seen docked in the photograph. Hannah and Richard Maynard circumnavigated Vancouver Island on the Princess Louise in 1879; Hannah Maynard went to Haida Gwaii in 1884 on the Princess Louise (Richard also went to Haida Gwaii with Chittenden on the Otter in 1884); and both Hannah and Richard returned to Haida Gwaii in 1888 on the Princess Louise. The most likely date is 1879.
