Custodial history
The source and date of acquisition of this album is unknown. The album and was accessioned by the Visual Records department (BC Archives) as 198509-005 and considered to be part of the Frederick Dally albums and identified as “Dally Album 8.” Because the album appears to primarily contain photographs not taken by Dally, the album has been removed from the Frederick Dally fonds (PR-1380) and is now described as a discrete file. Many of the creators of the photographs in this album are unknown and the compiler of the album is unknown.
Scope and content
The album consists of 65 pages, which contain 58 b&w photographs from various creators, and 5 engravings. The photographs primarily depict scenery throughout British Columbia, as well as some photographs of First Nations people and villages. Many of the photographs appear to have been taken by George Mercer Dawson during Geological Survey of Canada expeditions (1878 and 1879), and are complemented by the Survey reports. However, there are also some photographs by Frederick Dally and by Richard Maynard. When known, the photographers and any identifying information are provided (see the attached list of photographs). Many of the unidentified photographs may be Geological Survey of Canada photographs by Dawson as several are numbered in a similar way.

Physical condition
The album is very fragile and has come unbound. Many of the pages are foxed and have small tears.
Immediate source of acquisition
Arrangement
Because the album has come unbound, the original arrangement is uncertain. At some point, page numbers were written on each page, beginning with A, B, C, D, and then following in numerical sequence. This arrangement has been maintained, however it is unclear who wrote the page numbers on each page. The album appears to be roughly arranged geographically.
