Robert Douglas Watt was born in Picton Ontario on August 13, 1945. He was the oldest child of George Cuthill Watt and Mary Amelia Watt. The family moved to West Vancouver where Robert attended school. He went to Carleton University, graduating with a B.A. (1st class honours) in Canadian history in 1967 and an M.A. in Canadian history in 1968. He worked as a lecturer for Capliano College in North Vancouver in 1968 and then as an archivist for the Public Archives of Canada in Ottawa from 1969 to 1970. He moved back to Vancouver in 1970 to take a position as Vancouver City Archivist from 1971 to 1973. From 1973 to 1976 he was the Curator of History for the Centennial Museum (later the Vancouver Museum) becoming Chief Curator in 1977 and Director in 1980. He left the Vancouver Museum in 1988 to take up the role of the first Chief Herald of Canada based in Ottawa. He held this position until his retirement in June of 2007. In September 2009 he was appointed a Citizenship Judge in Vancouver. Robert Watt married Alison Logan in London, England on September 28, 1973. Watt has had a lifelong interest in history, heraldry and genealogy and has been a member of a variety of community boards related to history and heritage in the Vancouver area. He was involved in the Heraldry Society of Canada from 1977 to 1988, serving as director, VP and President of the Society as well as acting as a technical consultant on heraldry to local governments and institutions. He has published extensively on heraldry, genealogy and local history and heritage issues and has given public lectures and created exhibits on these subjects. For his public work, Robert Watt has received numerous awards and honours. He was appointed Rideau Herald Emeritus by the Governor General of Canada in 2007 and Lieutenant, Royal Victorian Order in January 2008.
