Administrative history

The Western Canadian Ranching Company was incorporated to acquire, develop and manage ranches throughout British Columbia, Canada, and the United States. Several of the ranches under its management included the Harper's Ranch, near Kamloops, the Gang Ranch, at Williams Lake, and the Perry Ranch. Throughout its existence, the Company maintained a head office in England with a branch office in Victoria, B.C.

Custodial history

The fonds was donated to the City of Victoria Archives in September 1976 as part of accession 97609-01. The fonds was held by the City of Victoria Archives as PR2 until March 2000 when it was transferred to the British Columbia Archives.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of seven series: Victoria office correspondence of James Douglas Prentice (1910-1911); A.E. McPhillips correspondence relating to the British Columbia Market Company and Western Canadian Ranching Company (1910-1912); miscellaneous records (1884-1925); Victoria Office correspondence (1889-1952); Victoria Office correspondence outwards (1892-1912); Thaddeus Harper and Matthew Warmsley vs John Cameron (1891); and one photograph.
