Administrative history
The Western Council of Arts in Education Associations was formed under the Society Act on 24 July 1981. The society arose out of the 1979 Canadian Conference of the Arts (BC Committee) report. The society was formed in order to achieve the following purposes: to foster an awareness of the importance of the arts in education in British Columbia; to foster the growth of arts in education programs in British Columbia; to provide a forum for communication and liaison among organizations concerned with the arts in education in British Columbia; to make representations to the government of British Columbia and its various ministries concerning the arts in education and to other government bodies; to encourage training in the arts for professionals working in education in British Columbia; to collect monies by way of fees, contributions, grants, gifts, benefits, devises and bequests for the purpose of supporting the goals of the Council.
Membership was drawn from the teaching and arts sectors of society, including teaching associations, trustee associations, and individual arts educations. The council was independent of government, and was funded primarily by individuals, members, and grants from foundations and government.
The society was dissolved in 2011 due to difficulties finding volunteer assistance. The remaining assets were donated to ArtStarts in Schools to create the “Arts in Education Council of B.C. Fund.”
Custodial history
The records were offered to the RBCM by the Secretary-Treasurer, Elizabeth Lane, of the organization after it was dissolved in 2011.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of the records of the Western Council of Arts in Education Associations (which also operated as Arts in Education Council of B.C.). The Council advocated for fine arts instruction in schools, sponsored programs and activities for teachers and students, and prepared reports and publications for submission to government and commissions. These activities are documented in the records, which consist of board minutes, publications and newsletters, reports, surveys, projects, and correspondence.
