A Holiday at Clinton, B.C., 1889

The file consists of one album of 14 photographs containing views of outdoor group portraits of identified members of the Langley and F.W. Foster families and others picnicking and hunting in the area around Clinton.

An image of “A holiday at Clinton, B.C. 1889,” handwritten and framed in lace, has been adhered to the front cover. “Photographs taken by W.H. Langley (son of A.J. Langley) on a visit to the F.W. Fosters at Clinton 1889” is written in blue ink on the inside cover. Pages are made of card, with a thin layer of paper adhered to the front, punched with two holes, and tied (bound) with white string. Photographs have been cut into circles 9.8 cm in diameter and adhered to album pages with unknown adhesive. Each photograph was printed with varying patterned borders 1 cm wide.

A piece of blue paper has been taped to the inside cover, listing members of the “upper ten” (see attached File List). A photograph consisting of a copy of “Looking down the valley,” framed with ribbon, and the words “Near the lake where drooped the willows long time ago” has been adhered to the outside back cover.

Original titles were added by the creator. “These photographs identified by Mr. Fred Foster (F.W. Foster) 1842 Feltham Road, March 31. 1963” is written on verso of the first page and Foster’s notations are written on the verso of a photograph’s preceding page in blue ink.

A pleasant gathering at Craigdarroch

The file consists of one album of 18 photographs, including front and back covers, created to commemorate a gathering at Craigdarroch Castle. Photographs include portraits of friends of the Langley family (including the Dunsmuir, Snowden, Scriven, Pemberton, and Finlayson families) posed on the exterior grounds of the castle. The order of the album follows the order of the events of the day.

Photographs have been cut into circles and adhered to album pages with unknown adhesive. They have been decoratively framed with four hand-drawn concentric circles in blue ink. Additional identifying text possibly added by Archives staff, Craigdarroch staff, or the donor.

Assorted travels

The item consists of one album containing five titled and dated sections of photographs:

  1. “A trip to the continent March-April 1900,” includes views of France and Italy. Large photographs were likely purchased during travels and include a number and the name of a photographer’s studio. There is pressed plant material “From Hadrian’s Villa” on page 3.

  2. “Port Townsend Cruise (in “Dorothy”) July 1900” includes views of various sailing vessels, many are identified.

  3. “Cruise to Nanoose Bay (in “Dorothy”), Sept 1902” includes photographs of house exteriors, sailing vessels, and unidentified women and men.

  4. “Duck shooting expedition to Douglas Lake (via Kamloops), October 1903” includes outdoor group portraits of identified men and one woman, building exteriors, and transportation by horse and boat.

  5. “A trip to Cassiar, 22nd Aug. to 2nd Oct 1904” includes views of landscapes, river boats, outdoor group portraits of partially identified men, and animal trophies. A “Memo of dates” and “Synopsis of hunting tip to Eagle River, 1904” are written on two of the pages. The collection ends with two full-page hunting photographs.

Numerous album pages are unused.

All photographs are captioned in black ink.

“(All photos (except large full plate[s]) taken with Kodak by WHL)” is written in pencil in the top left of the first album page, probably by Archives staff.

At Ashnola, May 24, 1892

The file consists of one album of 22 photographs, including front and back covers, created to commemorate a gathering at Ashnola on Queen Victoria’s birthday. Photographs include portraits of friends of the Langley family (including the Dunsmuir and Turner families). The order of the album follows the order of the events of the day, including a regatta at the Gorge.

Most photographs have been cut into circles and adhered to album pages with unknown adhesive. They have been decoratively framed with 2-3 hand drawn concentric circles in blue ink. Additional identifying text possibly added by Archives staff, Craigdarroch staff, or the donor.

Gymkhana at the Victoria Driving Park, April 26, 1890

The file consists of one album of 19 photographs containing views of unidentified horses, jockeys, and spectators at a Victoria horseracing competition. There are no identifying captions on the photographs.

Below the title, the following is typed on the album front cover:
“Committee: Major DuPont, Mr. Justice Drake, J.C. Davies Esq., John Martin, Esq., M.G. Drummond, Esq, Dr. Duncan R.C.A., G.L.S. Warrender, Esq., R.N.; Hon. Secretary: L.H. Webber, Esq.; Judges: Mr. Justice Drake, the Hon. P. O’Reilly, Major Dupont; Starter: Lieut. Col. Hughes, R.C.A.; Clerk of the Course: The Hon. C.E. Pooley.

Conditions: Post entries will be accepted. The decision of the judges to be absolutely final. The “assembly” will be sounded by a bugler ten minutes before each race. All prizes to be sweepstakes, except in race No. 10 in which the prize will be $25.”

Pages are made of card, with a thin layer of paper adhered to only the front, punched with two holes, and tied (bound) with [blue or green] ribbon. Photographs have been cut into circles 7.5 cm in diameter and adhered to album pages with unknown adhesive. They have each been decoratively framed with five concentric circles hand drawn in blue ink. The final photograph has been adhered to the outside back cover.

The series consists of seven photograph albums created by or for William Henry Langley between ca. 1880 and 1904.

Albums include photographs taken during gatherings of friends, views of locations within Victoria and across BC, as well as brief travels within Italy and France.

Queen’s Birthday, May 24, 1893

The file consists of one album of 10 photographs, including front cover, created to commemorate a gathering at Ashnola on Queen Victoria’s birthday. The photographs include portraits of friends of the Langley family (including the Fleet, Macdonald, Musgrave, Prior, Croft, Dunsmuir, and Snowden families).

Additional identifying text possibly added by Archives staff or the donor. On the verso of the first page “W. H. Langley Collection” is written in blue ink

Scrapbook

The file consists of one album of 101 photographs containing views of friends of the Langley family (including the Foster, Pemberton, Mouat, Helmcken, Beeton, Rithet, Dunsmuir, Turner, and Jones families and Judge Peter O’Reilly), J.T. Pearce Groceries & Provisions Store, views of Victoria Driving Park, and locations across Esquimalt including St. Paul’s Church, St. George’s Inn, an open-air tram and tramline terminus, and ships within the Esquimalt Harbour and graving dock (dry dock).

“A. J. [sic] Langley photographs identified 1963-1964 by Miss Flora Burns, Miss F. G. Hood, Mr. Fred Foster, Mr. Hamilton, Mrs. Hew Paterson, Mrs. H.C. Holmes” is written on the first page in blue ink. Additional identifying text possibly added by Archives staff.

The fonds consists of miscellaneous papers consisting of copies of indentures relating to land on the Queen Charlotte Islands, letters inward regarding cases, reports and memoranda on the activities and prospects of various mining companies, a map, a plan, and seven albums of photographs depicting gatherings of friends, views of locations within Victoria and across BC, as well as brief travels within Italy and France.
